LUANA NA MANU I HULA ALAPA’I A BERLIN The name of the Berlin Halau was given to the dancers by their Kumu Hula Roselle Keli’ihonipua Bailey after their first performance in September 2001 at the “Ethnologische Museum zu Dahlem”. It was the recognition for an unexpectedly difficult task as the tragic events on the 11. September 2001 had hindered most of the expected Hawaiian Dancers to travel to Germany. Roselle Keli’ihonipua decided to perform nevertheless and the German dancers as well as the Hawaiians present jumped into three days of hard rehearsal to meet the task. All went well and the Berlin Halau had come through its baptism of fire!
Luana Baumann is responsible for the halau in absence of Roselle Keli’ihonipua who travels to Berlin twice a year. Luana was born and partly raised in Honolulu, Oahu. She’s spent many years working as director at German theatres, and is very engaged in promoting bilingual education, and developing theatrical language learning concepts.
